Green Star Restaurant helps restaurants that care about our environment and thier profits. The content of this website and its other tools and resources guide restaurant managers who wish to lean about going-green, simply want to make a few eco-friendly changes to their operations, or wish to work towards the Certified Green Friendly accreditation.
Green Star's Mission
- To assist restaurant owners and managers in reducing their negative impact on our environment, and to increase their profits doing so - being environmentally friendly can be more profitable.
What is Green Star?
- The Green Star Restaurant Association was created by restaurant people for restaurant people. Created by restaurant owners/managers who are concerned about our impact on the environment, and it was created for other restaurant owners/managers as a collaboration to assist one another in reducing our overall negative impact on the environment.
- The Green Star Restaurant community is comprised restaurant operators that share information, tools and resources to help other restaurants join in our mission of going green, and reducing their negative impact on our environment. Green Star Restaurant also provided certification to the individual restaurants that make significant progress in going green. Many of the tips will help to reduce the high cost of electricity, gas, water and sewer bills, saving the restaurant money on their utility bills equivalent to at least ten times the cost of membership.
Why we do it –
- Simply put, it is our passion and responsibility. We are all living on the same small planet, and we want our children and grandchildren to inherit a cleaner and more sustainable planet earth. In the last 100 years we have done tremendous harm to our environment, at the same time we have become more dependant on expensive foreign fuel. Our goal is to eliminate that dependency, and to slow the rate of damage to our environment. Hopefully one day we will be able to reverse the impact of what has already been done. There are approximately one million restaurants in the United States and Canada with over 13 million employees. Our individual and collective efforts can have positive results for both our environment and economy.

What do restaurant managers need to do to become a “Certified Green Star Restaurant”?
- To earn your 5-Star Certification we first ask you to:
- Make a Commitment - We require that you make a commitment to implement five new environmentally friendly points each year (one for each point of the green star), most are very simple to do. Many are inexpensive or cost nothing to implement. We realize that each restaurant is starting from a different point all we ask is that you make improvements each year.
- Second - Share this web site with three other restaurant owners/managers, the more restaurants participating - the larger impact we will have on our environment.
- Third we ask you to share, what you have done, and your results, with Green Star Restaurant; so we can track your progress, provide you with additional support, and so we can share your successes with other restaurant operators in the Green Star community as well as the media.
"5-Star Certified Green Friendly"
Upon implementing your first five environmentally friendly points you will have elevated your status from member to “5-Star” Certified Green Friendly. Once you earn your 5-Star certification we will make 5-Star certificates and window decals/stickers available to you. We will also provide you with a press release to help share your accomplishment with your local media.

In order to keep your 5-Star Certification you are required to keep your commitment to implementing five new environmentally friendly points each additional year.
